Would you like to participate in a group workshop but haven’t formed a group yet?
No problem. Our workshops are held throughout the Netherlands, always in small groups of no more than four participants. This can be in places like Den Haag, Amersfoort Utrecht or Groningen. When you sign up for a date, you will be joining at most three other smartphone photographers eager to learn the finer points of camera handling. In such a small group, you are guaranteed personal attention.
The participation fee is €95 per person, which includes a personal reference guide and a smartphone gadget. For more information on available dates and locations, we invite you to view the following page. You can also make direct bookings on this website.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to take better photos with your smartphone. To understand what makes a good photo, we’ll start by looking at and analyzing photos. Analysis and evaluation are key aspects of photography, so this will be our first focus. We’ll use your own photos to examine why a picture works or doesn’t and what you can improve in terms of perspective, composition, and lighting.
You can specify which type of photography you want to improve. If you have a general interest in photography, we’ll cover various genres, such as food, landscapes, portraits, architecture, and street photography.
During the workshop, you’ll learn how to enhance the quality and mood of your photos with the right focus and lighting. You’ll also gain insight into creating depth by skillfully using the macro mode, foregrounds and backgrounds, lines, lights, and compositions. With a smartphone, you can achieve unique perspectives that are not possible with a traditional camera, such as shooting from low angles, against a wall, from above, or even underwater.
After the introduction, we’ll head outside to practice photography in real-life situations. For food or product photography, we’ll likely stay indoors. The workshop is very hands-on, so you’ll learn by doing, which is particularly effective in photography.
After our photo walk, we’ll teach you how to edit your photos using the Snapseed app for Android and iOS. We’ll give you a brief introduction to this powerful app, so you can quickly get familiar with it and learn how to make the most of your photos in terms of color, sharpness, and contrast.
We’ll also show you how to safely back up your valuable photos and provide tips on how to best post them on Instagram.
Whether you use a Samsung, iPhone, Huawei, Motorola, Oppo, Xiaomi, or OnePlus, this workshop is suitable for all brands. We will use example photos and possibly your own photos to show how to get the best out of your device by using the right settings and software. It’s helpful to have a mobile phone with multiple cameras to create different perspectives. Turn your phone around: how many cameras does your mobile have?
During the workshop, you will also receive a handy gadget for mobile photography, a remote control to take creative (group) photos, sharper close-ups, or unique photos that would otherwise not be possible. Also useful after the workshop: everything you have learned can be reviewed on your own personal webpage.
If you want to know more or schedule the workshop directly, feel free to send me a message via WhatsApp or email. If you have questions about photography in general or specifically for me, I’m here to help.
When you buy a new smartphone, the new features and camera settings can often be impressive but overwhelming. Sometimes it seems like you can’t see the forest for the trees with all these options. Here are two useful features that are explained:
For landscapes, you can use the Panorama mode (see examples on the right). So, if you don’t have a huge wide-angle lens on your device, you can still create a broader view. Additionally, the advantage is that your final photo will have a very high megapixel count, so you can have it printed in large format, for example, to hang on your wall.
When taking a panorama, hold the camera vertically so you don’t get an overly wide and thereby elongated image.
Use the stop button when you are finished making the panorama.
A specific example for Samsung users is leveraging the Pro Mode during sunsets, when capturing the day’s colors can be challenging due to the camera’s automatic settings. In manual mode, you can adjust the white balance (WB) yourself, allowing you to capture the intense colors of the sunset more accurately, just as you see them. Your have two options:
In your camera settings, select the option for RAW/dng format (known as ProRAW on iPhones) to gain more flexibility when adjusting the white balance and to minimize artifacts.
While it’s possible to adjust the colors of JPEG images in post-processing, this offers fewer options and can lead to color shifts and banding, which can degrade your images.
Other useful features include HDR, which provides an unparalleled dynamic range, as well as smart auto mode, focus tracking, extreme slow-motion for videos, portrait mode, time-lapse, a special mode for night photography, and burst mode. The workshop will cover these options depending on their relevance and utility for the attendees.
By using these settings and features, you’ll be equipped to not just capture but create moments that truly reflect your vision, utilizing the full potential of your smartphone’s camera technology. This approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of photographic techniques tailored to modern digital tools.
“I attended a private smartphone photography workshop with a friend led by Maarten. It really exceeded expectations!
Maarten has a lot of knowledge about photography (without giving unsolicited details) and about the smartphone (in our case, the iPhone 13 Pro). He explains everything very clearly and calmly.
Thanks to the questionnaire sent beforehand, he knew exactly what our wishes were and he perfectly tailored the workshop to them. He really takes the time to answer all questions and demonstrates everything in practice (and lets us practice too!). As the icing on the cake, we received a handy gadget that allows you to take even more fun photos :)
In short: highly recommended!”
Since February 2019, Maarten has been an official ambassador for Samsung Netherlands. This role allows him to use the latest Samsung Galaxy devices, showcasing their quality and photographic capabilities. His photos are frequently featured by Samsung Netherlands and posted on their Instagram to demonstrate the potential of their technology.
It’s important to note that while Maarten holds the Galaxy line in high regard, he does not exclusively prefer any single brand. His experiences with other leading brands have also been very positive. In addition to a Samsung, he uses an iPhone 13 Pro for his daily photography needs. This approach ensures a well-rounded perspective on mobile photography, emphasizing that great results can be achieved with various high-quality devices.
If you’re curious to see the photos Maarten has taken with his Samsung Galaxy, you can check out his Instagram. He enjoys the challenge of curating photos around specific themes. There, you can find compilations showcasing various features such as HDR, Burst mode, telephoto lens, ultra-wide-angle, timer, and Night mode, illustrating the diverse capabilities of his equipment.
If you want to get started with more smartphone tips, check out these three tips for better photos with your extreme wide-angle lens, the ultra-wide-angle.
Did you know that you can even capture lightning with your mobile phone, as explained in this video?
In addition to this workshop focused on phone photography, we also offer customized workshops for both beginner and advanced photographers. A workshop dedicated to photo editing is also available.
